Somomaber Africa Foundation works in schools across Sub-Saharan Africa that the digital age skipped — putting devices, trained teachers, and curriculum in local languages into classrooms with no power, no internet, and no realistic path to either. We don't arrive with a solution built somewhere else. We sit down, ask what's broken, and build from there.
Opportunity gaps are built by people. So people can close them.
The age of artificial intelligence did not arrive gradually. It landed — inside a few years, on every industry at once. Somewhere in a well-resourced classroom, a child is already learning to build with these tools. Somewhere else, a child of exactly the same age has never switched on a computer.
Sub-Saharan Africa has the youngest population on earth. By 2050, roughly one in four people alive will be African. That is an extraordinary concentration of human potential arriving at exactly the moment the rules of work are being rewritten.
The problem is not that these children are behind. It is that nobody built them a door. Not a single link in the chain — devices, electricity, trained teachers, curriculum in a language they speak — was ever put in place. The gap is not a natural fact about the world. It is an artefact of decisions.
Which is the only genuinely hopeful thing about it. A gap that people constructed is a gap that people can dismantle. That is the entire premise of this foundation.
We built this around the things we refuse to do
Every one of those refusals costs us something — time, speed, the easy version of this work. We think the easy version is why so little of it lasts.
Four stages, and the first one is just listening
This is the actual order we move in. It is slower than arriving with a finished programme, and it is the reason our work is still running in a school a year after we've stopped visiting.
We sit down before we build anything
We meet the head teacher, the classroom teachers, the parents, and the local leaders — separately, because they don't always say the same thing. We ask what's actually broken, what's already been tried, and what failed. Most of what we learn contradicts the assumption we walked in with.

The measure of success is not how long we stay involved. It is whether the school, the teachers, and the community are still running it without us. Where that's happened, teachers have gone on to train other schools on their own initiative — which is the outcome we're actually building for.

A programme that reaches fifty schools in a year and collapses in the second one has helped nobody. We'd rather move at the speed a community can absorb, and leave behind something that outlives the funding cycle that paid for it.
Six programs that hold each other up
None of these works alone. Devices without trained teachers break. Training without curriculum fades by the second term. Curriculum nobody's parents understand gets quietly dropped. We run all six because removing any one of them undoes the rest.
ClassroomConnect
Hardware that works where the electricity was never coming.
Most digital education programs assume a school has power and a connection, or will have soon. In much of rural Sub-Saharan Africa neither is true, and neither is scheduled. ClassroomConnect starts from that fact rather than working around it.
Solar-powered devices, offline-capable software, and a maintenance plan written before anything is installed. The equipment list is drawn up after a site visit, never from a catalogue — a one-room school with forty students needs something structurally different from a four-hundred-student compound.
The part most programs skip is what happens in month seven, when something breaks. Repairs, replacement parts, and a named local contact are budgeted into every installation from the start. A dead tablet in a locked cupboard has helped nobody.
TeacherRise
The highest-return thing we do, by a wide margin.
A single teacher will stand in front of somewhere around 1,200 students across a career. Every skill they gain compounds across every one of those children. Nothing else in our work multiplies like this, which is why teacher training is the program we protect first when budgets are tight.
Training runs in the local language, uses examples from that community, and is followed by mentorship and a peer network. A workshop that ends on Friday and is never mentioned again is an event, not a program. Teachers keep network access indefinitely, so someone stuck in month four has a person to ask.
We also answer the question teachers actually arrive with, which is rarely the one on the agenda: will this replace me? The honest answer is no — AI changes what a classroom needs, but nothing replaces the person who knows which child came to school hungry.
MtaalaAI
You cannot learn what you cannot understand.
Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the most linguistically diverse regions on earth. A student might speak one language at home, another in the market, and be taught in a third at school. Before they can engage with an idea, they have to translate it — a cognitive tax students in monolingual systems never pay.
MtaalaAI builds AI and digital literacy curriculum for mother-tongue instruction — currently in Swahili, Dholuo and Kamba, with more in development. Every module draws its examples from local life: farming, trade, community health, storytelling. Concepts arrive as something familiar rather than something foreign.
Every module is designed to work with or without a device in the room, because plenty of the classrooms we reach have neither yet. And because curriculum is written once and used everywhere, it's the program with the longest reach relative to its cost.
CommunityRoot
A school is not an island, and change that ignores that doesn't hold.
When we first sat with parents and elders, we heard something consistent and wiser than most program design: we want our children ready for what's coming, but we don't want them to lose who they are getting there. That is a serious request, and it shaped how we work.
CommunityRoot brings parents, elders and local leaders into the program rather than around it. Awareness sessions, workshops on supporting digital learning at home, and honest conversations about what AI is and isn't. A parent who understands why their child is on a device is a parent who defends the program instead of doubting it.
It also runs the other direction. Community feedback is what tells us when something we designed isn't working — usually months before any evaluation would have caught it.
ScholarPath
She had the grades. She'd never met an engineer.
The barrier for a bright student in a rural school is rarely awareness or ambition. It's that she has never met a single person who does the work she's aiming at. No relative, no teacher, no neighbor. She's making a decision about her life with no one to ask what the job actually is.
ScholarPath matches high-potential students from our partner schools with African professionals working in technology — engineers, data scientists, researchers. Alongside mentorship: scholarship support, guidance through applications, and connections to internships and first roles.
It's the smallest program by headcount and the one that closes the loop. Everything else we do builds a foundation. This is the part that carries someone across.
DataForGood Africa
You cannot argue for a problem nobody has measured.
There is remarkably little reliable data on the state of digital education across Sub-Saharan Africa. Which means ministries budget without evidence, funders allocate on instinct, and organizations like ours make the case with anecdotes because that's all anyone has.
DataForGood Africa collects, analyzes and publishes open data on digital access and AI literacy in the schools we work with — and makes it freely available, including to organizations doing the same work we are. Hoarding evidence in this sector helps nobody.
The advocacy side takes that evidence to education ministries and policy forums, arguing for digital literacy in national curricula. One policy change reaches more classrooms than we ever will directly.

Because the programs depend on each other, money given to one rarely stays in one lane. A device fund pays for a device, and the trained teacher who makes it useful. A curriculum module gets written once and lands in every classroom we reach. There is no wasted lane here.

Dennis founded Somomaber Africa Foundation after years working across web administration, programme management and AI data evaluation — a combination that put him on both sides of the divide the foundation exists to close. He has worked directly on the systems training modern AI, and grew up with the East African education system these programmes are built for.
He leads programme direction, partnerships and the foundation's work with education ministries and funders.
